THE FACTORY OF THE FUTURE EIF Breakfast Debate5 May 2010 8.00-9.30 Private Salon, Members' Restaurant, European Parliament, Brussels Following the discussion of the previous evening focused on the impact of ICT on the real economy, which can only be compared with the productivity gains from electrification in the early 20th century, this breakfast presented hands-on experiences of how the manufacturing industry is changing.
Examples were drawn both from the ICT industry and from a sector traditionally less close to ICT. For the fashion industry, ICT can create new virtual fitting rooms, which reduce design times and development costs by bringing together designers and tailors from different locations around the world. For the semiconductor industry, very intensive use of ICT is a requirement to churn out cutting-edge computer chips in their millions to serve markets across Europe and the world.
