With a new data protection proposal from the European Commission and a proposal for a Privacy Bill of Rights from the Obama Administration anticipated later in February, privacy and data protection are at the top of the transatlantic agenda.  The independent Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which stands to play an important role in the new U.S. framework, has been making headlines in the past year with its landmark enforcement actions against Google and Facebook. David C. Vladeck, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, will provide his thoughts on the U.S. government’s data privacy framework and the FTC’s role in providing robust enforcement of consumers’ privacy rights.

This special EIF outreach event will lay the foundation for EIF follow-up in Washington with US legislators as part of EIF’s involvement in this year’s Transatlantic Week hosted by Transatlantic Policy Network.

The Bureau of Consumer Protection works to protect consumers against unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent practices. The Bureau conducts investigations, sues companies and people who violate the law, develops rules to protect consumers, and educates consumers and businesses about their rights and responsibilities. The Bureau also collects complaints about consumer fraud and identity theft and makes them available to law enforcement agencies across the country.
