As the immediate crisis in transatlantic data flows is addressed, we need to think more broadly about how Europe can take advantage of the opportunities afforded both by data-driven innovation and the data that traditional industrial companies increasingly use to add value.

The role of regulation and trade is critical in maximizing the economic potential of intra-European and external data flows. On 17 February Pilar del Castillo, MEP and EIF Chair, invited EIF members to discuss how smart regulation and trade agreements can boost data’s growth-enhancing potential.

Magnus Rentzhog, Senior Adviser at the Department for WTO Affairs - Swedish National Board of Trade, presented a report on Cross-border Data Transfers, Global Value Chains, and the Production of Goods - “No Transfer, No Production”.

John Doxaras, Founder & CEO of Warply, spoke from the data industry’s point of view on best ways to approach EU and Transatlantic data flows regulation.

Harsha V. Singh, Senior Associate at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, spoke about global trends in trade, the impact on labor markets and on youth empowerment. He noted that data transfer and technology has led to new business models and locational policies. He also presented the E15 Initiative, which brings together world-class experts and institutions to generate strategic analysis and recommendations for government, business and civil society geared towards strengthening the global trade and investment system for sustainable development.

Nele Eichhorn, Member of Cabinet of European tradeCommissioner Cecilia Malmström, presented a personal reflection on the place of data issues in trade and other EU policies and instruments.
