ICT can offer significant solutions towards a low carbon world and more sustainable growth. However, ICT plays so far only a minor role in the political debate to tackle climate change. On 26 April, Pilar del Castillo MEP and EIF Chair invited European Commission and industry representatives to a roundtable debate on Climate Change and ICT in the European Parliament.

Before the discussion started, we asked the panel speakers if enough investment has been made in climate related applications of digital technology. This is what they had to say:

In opening remarks Pilar del Castillo pointed out that ICT can offer solutions to solve the climate change issue. She invited speakers to present their experience on how to use digital tools to achieve a low carbon economy.

Hermann Meyer, CEO of ERTICO – ITS Europe, spoke about intelligent transport systems and how they can help reduce CO2 emission.

Niall Dunne, Chief Sustainability Officer at BT Group, described how connectivity is enabling the sharing economy as one way to tackle carbon emission, especially through car sharing services.
He also spoke about BT’s initiative Net Good aiming to deliver more carbon abatement than emissions in our end-to-end carbon footprint.

Maher Chebbo, General Manager Energy and Natural Recourses at SAP, spoke about big data’s role in energy consumption prediction and management across the EU.

Mark van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit for new energy technologies, innovation and clean coal at DG ENER, presented European Commission priorities for 2016 in this area.

Evert Dudok, Executive Vice President, Communications, Intelligence & Security at Airbus Defence and Space, spoke about the satellite role in tackling climate change related problems.
