Dr. Klaus Illgner-Fehns received his diploma degree in electrical engineering with an emphasis on communications engineering at RWTH Aachen in 1991. Since then he was with Institute for Communications Engineering, RWTH Aachen, as research assistant. 1998 he earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from RWTH Aachen for his thesis on "Scalable Video Coding".
Working for Texas Instruments, Dallas, USA until Summer 2000 he developed image processing algorithms for digital cameras and implemented them on DSP based embedded systems on chip (SoC). Besides contributions to the design of those chips he supported the marketing and sales of the chip to camera manufacturers.
In July 2000 Dr. Illgner joined Siemens AG, Corporate Technology, in Munich. He was responsible for a team developing new technologies in the field of multimedia communications in heterogeneous networks. He supported business units in developing an IPTV-product and on mobile broadcast including representing the company in international technical fora.
In November 2004 he was appointed managing director of the Institut für Rundfunktechnik (IRT), Munich. He is determined to strengthen the research institute of the public broadcasters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as an internationally oriented scout of broadcasters in current technical developments. Making technical developments happen is important to him. Working with industry enables IRT to understand the impact of technical developments in an highly dynamic market. Dr. Illgner is member of the board or steering group of various national and international bodies and consortia.
