Broadband for all: how is Europe progressing?

EIF Breakfast Debate

Further to the dinner debate on the previous evening on radio spectrum policy, this breakfast will focus specifically on digital divide issues.

The European Commission target of total digital inclusion for all citizens by 2013 (100% broadband coverage) is one of the key goals of the Digital Agenda for Europe. In this context, special consideration should be given to rural areas and the challenges facing every member state in rolling out broadband to the 10 million citizens in un-served parts of Europe. There is an urgent need for the deployment of innovative solutions to cover these territories, and the breakfast will explore:

• How is Europe going to achieve this ambitious goal?

• What are the crucial technical and territorial elements that need to be taken into account?

• What is the role of wireless broadband and of satellite technologies?
