Data management in health care has become a hot issue. More and more patient data is being collected and stored. Medical organisations do it for ensuring high quality care; patients for active monitoring and prevention; universities and research institutes for medical research; the pharmaceutical industry to develop and improve their products; and governments to improve overall care and reduce the cost of care for their citizens.
All these developments are welcome and necessary, but they raise many questions and concerns about implementation: who stores and controls the data and how is individual privacy guaranteed; how secure is the storage; how transparent are the management processes and who is responsible for data loss and integrity; what are the longer term opportunities and challenges.
