On 24 March EIF and the Digital Policy Alliance (DPA) co-hosted a joint event on ‘Mobile and broadband: what your constituents would like to know’ in the House of Lords, Westminster.
This debate followed a previous EIF-DPA joint event on ‘Perspectives for Mobile and Broadband in the UK 2020’ with European Commission Vice-President Neelie Kroes, hosted in Europe House, London, in March 2013. A year later, prominent speakers provided insights on the value of mobile and broadband in our future digital world, with a special focus on access and deployment in the UK, needs and next steps.
This year’s event was the occasion to present two newly released documents looking at major digital trends in the Europe, and the digital infrastructure outlook in the UK.
EIF’s report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’ challenges Europe’s political leaders and policy-makers – and more particularly European legislators – to put Europe’s place in tomorrow’s digital world at the center of their preoccupations and priorities today. The newly elected European Parliament, together with the European Commission and EU member-state governments, will bear great responsibility for shaping Europe place in the digital world of 2030. This report tries to make clear that this is about much more than just the technology. It’s about what we do with the technology throughout our economies and societies.
Watch EIF report ‘The Digital World in 2030: What Place for Europe?’ authors Peter Linton and Ajit Jaokar talking about the report:
The second document presented at this meeting was Digital Business First’s report ‘The UK’s enduring broadband deficit: A divided nation – Time for an effective plan’. The report aims to send a message that enabling a faster, more connected infrastructure for the UK is the best way to promote growth and jobs and outlines the action plan for the UK’s government to achieve it.
Alex Pratt, Chairman Buckinghamshire Business First and Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) presented the report. Stephen McGibbon, EMEA Regional Technical Officer, Microsoft; Peter Olson, President DIGITALEUROPE and Head of European Affairs, Ericsson; Alexandra Birtles, Head of External Communications, Talk Talk then shared their insights on the report.
Watch Peter Olson and James Elles MEP commenting on the Digital Business First’s report ‘The UK’s enduring broadband deficit: A divided nation – Time for an effective plan’.
EIF established a cooperation with UK-based Digital Policy Alliance (DPA) to work together to improve political understanding of information society issues at national and European level. DPA brings together politicians, officials and industry to help improve the quality of policy formation, consultation, scrutiny, implementation and monitoring.
