    Director of Radio Access Networks, Global CTO, Telefonica


Ian currently works in Telefonica’s Global Technology organisation and is responsible for Radio Access Networks reporting to the Global CTO. The role involves setting the radio technology strategy for Telefonica as well as driving synergies and specific projects on mobile access networks across the group. This includes legacy technologies like GSM and 3G, as well as new and future technologies such as LTE, LTE-Advanced and 5G.   Ian has worked in the mobile radio industry for over 25 years.  Prior to his current role he lead the Radio Engineering team in Telefonica O2UK where he was responsible for the design of O2UK’s 2G and 3G radio networks.  He has also spent periods working on a range of mobile network design, strategy and deployment projects in O2 Group, BT Cellnet and BT Labs which included a period of secondment at GSM start-up Smartone in Hong Kong.

Ian holds a Masters degree in Electronic Systems Engineering from Aston University in the UK and is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IET.
